Salt Pan Workers work under extremely hazardous conditions as the extreme bright dazzling light reflected from the white salt destroys eyesight, resulting in many of the salt workers and their children being able to see only in black & white and not in colour.
The most urgent issue facing them was to protect their eyes, as there was a risk of blindness. EMF sought to intervene to enhance their working conditions. The workers were educated about the risk to their eyes. A donor for dark glasses was found and dark glasses to protect the eyes of the salt workers were distributed free of cost.
AIDS Awareness
AIDS awareness is an urgent need especially in rural India. Earth Matters Foundation has given a series of spots on AIDS to be telecast in all the Doordarshan Kendras around India, in regional/local languages, totally free of cost
The foundation has used the film ‘Chakravyuh’ - a 30 min Video on AIDS as a tool that could be used to sensitize and create awareness in rural areas through NGO’s in many parts of the country.
Traffic Education
With the boom in the automobile industry and the increasing number of cars on the roads, road safety has become crucial.
Disseminating information and creating awareness through workshops, film screening, video library, field trips, discussions, seminars, training programmes all over the country especially for children and youngsters in schools and colleges, towns and villages.
Establishing A Resource Centre
EMF aims towards enlarging a visual/word documentation database on environment, wildlife and other social issues whilst supporting research and documentation by like-minded groups. This can done by creating a website, networking with national and international agencies including the likes of researchers, field workers, marine scientists, environmentalists. EMF already has a valuable database contributed by Mike Pandey through two decades of his contributions to the field of wildlife filmmaking.
Promoting Community Participation
Helping in formation of collectives in urban colonies/localities and initiating projects to encourage residents to improve and protect their immediate environment.
Motivating the youth and children in taking action at their level, however miniscule it may seem for e.g. – recycling plastic, water conservation, garbage disposal, sanitation etc.
Forming a network of clubs/association of persons around the country especially in villages and schools and promoting interaction and sharing of positive action and creative ideas for the protection and promotion of the environment and wildlife.
