A number of companies near Central Railway Station and along the Damrak offer canal tours of the city. The guided tour offered a commentary of the major sights in an unhurried and not overly intrusive manner. Years back, when shipping was the Dutch financial backbone, the canals were used to transport products to and from the docks. A canal tour is a very tourist thing to do in Amsterdam, yet always worth it.
