The Thenardiers….they are pretty much the lowest scum of the lowest scum of scum. Yah. They steal, they cheat, they do anything they can to end up on top. But they never do. LOL
IN fact, Thenardier (that’s the husband…the wife is Madame Thenardier) has his own little gang, and he goes around stealing stuff.
And, they are amazing actors. All of the money Fantine owed wasn’t for Cosette. The Thenardiers pretty much gave her enough to get by, and not even that much usually. She wore a potato sack for clothes, for goodness sakes! She was pretty much their slave. And, whenever they felt like it, they would make up some silly reason for Fantine to send more money, which they used for gambling, debts, and to spoil their own daughter, Eponine (A CHARIE LATER ON IN THE SECOND ACT!! Love triangles are so fun….XD)
So Valjean, honoring his promise to Fantine, has come to fetch Cosette. And, of course, the Thenardiers aren’t going down without a fight. Cosette was such an awesome source of income that they don’t want to give her up. Valjean, who’s pretty much annoyed and bored with the whole affair, just gives them 15,000 sous, which is a lot of money back then (This also comes into an important part in the second act!!!), and takes the girl without waiting for anything.
